BricsCAD – What’s the story behind the software?

Where is BricsCAD from? Who created it? What is the story behind the company?…

These are some of the most frequent questions that we get when presenting MagiCAD for BricsCAD. Many are already familiar with MagiCAD, but the story of our latest supported platform is less known. The history of BricsCAD and Bricsys, the company behind the software, actually goes back further then you might think, so let’s take a quick look at where it came from and how we got here.

The beginning

The story of BricsCAD, like many other global software solutions, starts with a single person, passionate about their field. In the case of BricsCAD, this was Erik de Keyser, a Belgian CAD entrepreneur who founded Bricsys in 2002. From the beginning, Bricsys set out to build cost-effective and functional CAD tools. After some early iterations of various identities, the company’s CAD software became known with its current name BricsCAD in 2004. And in case you were wondering, the name is not referring to “bricks”, but stands for Building Related Interactive Computer System.

Part of Hexagon AB

In 2018 Bricsys became part of the Swedish multinational industrial technology company Hexagon AB. The solid backing of Hexagon AB enables Bricsys to continue developing what is now the CAD tool of choice for over 300,000 users worldwide.

Global solution

The Bricsys Global Headquarters was established in 2002 in Ghent, Belgium, but the company’s global footprint has changed considerably since those early days. Bricsys is today a truly global company with users in over 110 countries worldwide and BricsCAD is currently available in 14 languages. The easiest way to connect with the global BricsCAD community is in the active BricsCAD Forum.

Looking ahead

BricsCAD is continuously developing and part of this is the expanding network of resellers and compatible software solutions. This is finally where we at MagiCAD Group come in. In 2023 MagiCAD Group became an official BricsCAD reseller and also released MagiCAD for BricsCAD, enabling comprehensive MEP design capabilities on the BricsCAD platform. We are happy to be able to bring the benefits of MagiCAD software for MEP design also to users of the BricsCAD platform.
