The Project

The former court house of Sanremo is currently being transformed into 80 modern residences for seniors. The new residents will have their own, completely independent homes with common spaces and services. The inauguration of the building is excepted in early 2021.

The Challenge

Living spaces for the elderly have multi-functions ranging from homes, restaurants and other commercial spaces, to hospital-type spaces. Therefore, they require specific MEP design knowledge and expert know-how to address such unique needs of the residents and service providers.

Studio Ing. Alberto Canavese was responsible for designing the new MEP systems of the Ex Tribunale taking into account the building’s multi-purpose. “Our studio designed the air conditioning, domestic water and fire protection systems of the Ex Tribunale Sanremo,” says principal engineer, Alberto Canavese. “The most important challenge of the project was to adapt a modern engineering system into an outdated building with significant structural constraints. For this reason, we also imported the structural model into a BIM model. This enabled us to verify all the interference between the MEP systems and the structures.”

The Solution

“In this project we used MagiCAD Piping and Ventilation modules not only for the design of systems but also for calculations,” comments Alberto Canavese. “By using MagiCAD, we were able to simulate different design solutions and to quickly improve our BIM model based on the calculations results.”

MagiCAD includes families of BIM objects that are modelled from physical products to a high level of detail, with the correct dimensions and performance information provided by the manufacturer. The technical values are always present in the model, enabling accurate calculations of the engineering systems during the design. The MEP designers can therefore calculate while designing​ and compare different alternatives.

Integrated calculations offered by MagiCAD enable dimensioning, analysing and verifying that the design requirements are meet. They ensure the quality of the design without re-work and need for a parallel non-synchronized model. Furthermore, MagiCAD is localised to meet the calculation, presentation and work-flow requirements of some of the major European markets. This enables the designers to perform fully integrated calculations based on local standards.

Additionally, MagiCAD automates many time-consuming routine tasks in Ventilation and Piping design, including the creation and editing of standard connections, duct and pipe crossings, elevation changes, as well as various more demanding connections and adjustments. “The main advantage of using MagiCAD in the project compared to standard Revit was certainly the speed of development of both piping and ventilation systems,” Mr. Canavese concludes.
