Innovative and sustainable school buildings with MagiCAD for Revit

A stellar example of this comes in the form of the demolition and reconstruction project of a primary school in Grosseto, Italy. The design of the MEP, energy, and fire-prevention systems of the school was made by the Italian design, construction, and consultancy company RIMOND s.r.l. using MagiCAD for Revit, while the rendering and architectural project was handled by OPERASTUDIO – Magni Paci Architetti.

The school facilities have been designed and configured following Italian Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM) requirements. Making extensive use of renewable sources, the building clears the nearly-zero energy building (NZEB) threshold by almost 50% and is well positioned for upcoming European Zero Energy Building (ZEB) and carbon neutrality directives (EU/2024/1275).

Innovative and sustainable MEP design solutions

In addition to energy savings, the design project also focused on reducing the visual impact of the MEP equipment. The main equipment was placed in a large underground technical room, positioned centrally with respect to the floor plan layout. This solution minimised the visual impact of the systems and also makes routine and non-routine maintenance work easier, thus extending the working life of the equipment.

The building is equipped with air source and air-to-water heat pumps and radiant panels, with air handling units divided according to areas and functions. Additionally, domestic hot production water is handled by monobloc heat pump units that use natural refrigerants with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) value of 0. The sanitary distribution system has been designed in a ring configuration to prevent stagnation in the networks and mitigate the risk of legionnaires’ disease formation. Special rainwater recovery systems provide water for the school’s toilets and irrigation water is primarily sourced from an underground well, minimizing the use of potable water from the public water system

RIMOND benefits from MagiCAD for Revit

To meet the needs of the Grosseto Primary School reconstruction, RIMOND added an additional MagiCAD Piping module license to their existing pool of MagiCAD Piping, Ventilation, and Supports and Hangers licenses for a peak period in the project. This strategy allowed the company to flexibly adapt to the different phases of the project, from advanced design to basic modelling, ensuring optimal management of time and resources.

When designing large-scale systems, effective coordination is crucial in order to minimise interference and ensure timely project updates. MagiCAD functions, such as builderswork openings, clash detection, and the MagiCAD Create application for the development of new MEP families, allowed RIMOND to have precise control over every detail of the project.

With MagiCAD for Revit, RIMOND benefitted from fast and efficient solutions for the entire design workflow, from drawing and balancing networks, through component selection and configuration, to the creation and update of calculation reports.
