Tecnicaer benefit from accurate system sizing and reduced design time in Pontedera Hospital project

As part of the Tuscan health authority’s redevelopment project, the Turin-based engineering company Tecnicaer carried out the construction of the new emergency department of Hospital Felice Lotti in Pontedera, Italy.
The Project
The new emergency department of Hospital Felice Lotti is an innovative project that takes advantage of the latest technologies to ensure maximum efficiency of the emergency services and a high level of user comfort.
The project involved the demolition of the hospital’s existing Pavilion F and the construction of a new building that will be optimised from a functional point of view thanks to a regrouping of spaces that are used for urgent medical emergencies, including an emergency department, an intensive care unit and an operating block.
The project was managed entirely in a BIM environment and required integrated design across disciplines and collaboration with all stakeholders involved in the process.
The challenges
The biggest challenge for Tecnicaer in the project was how to develop a complex building while ensuring the continuity of the hospital’s operations and minimising potential interference with the hospital’s business and service network.
The survey and the initial phases of the project revealed additional considerations within the work area, including:
• A pre-existing ramp leading to the emergency department.
• Piping systems passing through the covered connections between pavilions and on the first floor of the building that was being demolished
• External networks (medical gas network, fire-protection network, drainage networks) serving the existing pavilions
