Most countries have a definition for construction project work stages. These definitions can be very different in scope and detail from one country to another. The table below, uses a generalised model that corresponds with the following common definitions: Pre-design, Conceptual Design, Schematic Design, Detailed Design, Construction, Handover, In Use and End of Life.

The table summarises selected European construction work stage definitions, including UK’s RIBA Plan of Work and Germany’s HOAI Leistungsphasen, according to these eight general work stages. Some of them extend beyond construction. Some countries have more detailed definitions with more than five work stages and in those cases, the additional work stages have been listed under the applicable general work stage.
