Arup’s Istanbul office contributed structural, mechanical, electrical and civil engineering expertise to the Forum Istanbul Shopping Centre project.

This extensive development project for shops, offices and parking facilities covers a construction area of around 350,000 m2.

Arup has used MagiCAD to its full potential. All ventilation ducts and piping were implemented in MagiCAD. Arup’s designers used MagiCAD’s functions for automatic duct and pipe sizing. They calculated pressure loss, sound levels and sprinkler systems. BOMs – bills of materials – were generated automatically directly from MagiCAD.

And they used MagiCAD’s functions for collision control and automatic sections within MagiCAD and with AutoCAD and AutoCAD architecture objects.

Making good use of MagiCAD plugins

MagiCAD plugins were also used to link manufacturer-specific calculation programs to MagiCAD. For example, Arup used SystemairCAD from Systemair and ProUnit from Swegon to calculate air handling units (AHUs). The result of the calculations were then easily transferred to MagiCAD.

“In this project, the Forum Istanbul Shopping Centre, we have used MagiCAD for designing all the HVAC systems. Arup’s Istanbul office is somewhat of a trailblazer for MagiCAD. We have used MagiCAD in several large projects and are very satisfied with the program’s performance. I’m happy to see that our other offices in Europe are quickly catching on.” Berke Çelikel, senior mechanical engineer at Arup in Istanbul.

Arup is an independent company with designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services.

The company was founded in 1946 with an initial focus on structural engineering. Arup received international attention with the structural design of the Sydney Opera House, followed by its work on the Pompidou Centre in Paris.

Arup’s work for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing has reaffirmed its reputation for delivering innovative and sustainable designs.
