1.  Support for Autodesk AutoCAD 2018

MagiCAD 2018 for AutoCAD supports the brand new AutoCAD 2018 version, as well as the previous versions 2015-2017, including the verticals AutoCAD MEP and AutoCAD Architecture. From this release forward, MagiCAD version numbers will follow the Autodesk version naming convention (i.e. 2018).

 

2.  Search and load products from MagiCloud

The new version of MagiCAD offers integration with our online product library MagiCloud. Access to MagiCloud’s extensive product selection combined with powerful search functions will help you find the most optimal products for each installation easier and faster. MagiCloud product library can be accessed directly from MagiCAD, and once a product is selected, it can be loaded into your MagiCAD project.

 

3.  Automatic software update notifications

MagiCAD 2018 automatically informs the user about the availability of important software updates. This makes keeping your MagiCAD version up to date easier than before, and ensures that you have all the latest tools and functions at your disposal.

 

4.  Enhanced short-circuit calculations – Selectivity checking

Short-circuit calculations now enable selectivity checking. It is possible to define tripping values for fuses and circuit breakers in the project. When running a short-circuit calculation, the protective device’s lower tripping current is compared to the previous protective device’s higher tripping current on specified tripping times to verify that they operate in the right order. Selectivity checking can be carried out in one-phase or three-phase short-circuit calculations.

 

5.  System Designer – Merge dataset

MagiCAD System Designer now includes a function for merging information from other dataset files to the current dataset. The new tool allows merging of various kinds of data, including product definitions, property definitions, layer definitions etc. This will offer convenient means for the user to reuse information which has been defined earlier without the need to type in the same information again.

 

6.  System Designer – Improved settings for dataset location

The new version of System Designer makes using a project-specific dataset file more convenient due to the new option of defining whether the dataset location is absolute or relative to the location of the drawing files. You can copy the dataset file and drawing files to a new location when starting a new project and the copied drawings automatically refer to the copied dataset without the need to reconnect. Using absolute file location enables the use of the same dataset even when the drawings are copied to another location. It is up to the user to choose which of the options best suites their workflow. Moreover, the dataset location is now clearly indicated to the user in the Design Data dialog.

 

7.  Circuits in communication and data systems design

MagiCAD Electrical now offers data circuit objects similar to the electrical circuits used with power systems. You can indicate a connection to a host and assign devices to the host through the “Update Drawing Data” function. A data circuit is created in the same way as an electrical circuit using the “Circuit” option when drawing a data cable or connecting a cable directly to a cable packet or a host device.

A list of physical and/or logical connections can be viewed using the “Connections report” and the “Device connection report” tools.

 

8.  Find & Replace for climate beams and fan coil units

The Find & Replace tool now supports climate beams and fan coil units

 

9.  New option for defining temperature difference for climate beams and fan coil units

[Ventilation and Piping/Calculations]

New “dT by part” option has been added to climate beams and fan coil units to define the temperature difference between supply and return flow. This will provide the users with more possibilities for defining the required flow of the heating or cooling liquid separately for each device, instead of the whole system, resulting in more accurate pipe sizes.

 

10.  User-configurable balancing methods

[Ventilation and Piping / Calculations]

Balancing calculations for both ventilation and piping systems introduce new options for controlling how the network is balanced. The functional area of the control device can be limited by predefining balancing limits for pressure drops to ensure correct function of the device in all situations. The user can also define a throttling limit as a percentage of the functional area. Moreover, it is possible to select the method for managing excess pressure when balancing the network.

 

11.  Dimension text variables for slanted cable tray elevations

With the new reference point dimension text variables, it is possible to annotate elevation values from specific points along a slanted cable tray or conduit.  Also the bottom and top elevation dimension text variables have been updated to display the bottom and top elevations of devices, switchboards and combination boxes.

 

12.  New properties for electrical circuits

Electrical circuit properties now include “Apparent current”, “Voltage drop percentage” and “Voltage drop voltage”. The “Cable sizing and circuit management” function calculates the voltage drop percentage and voltage. Voltage drops and apparent currents can be displayed in dimension texts and in switchboard schematics.

 

13.  New properties for switchboard schematics

Switchboard schematics now include new properties and allow old and new properties to be updated from plan drawings to schematics and vice versa. With the improvements to the “Update circuits” function, all power-related properties are now combined under the “Power values” option. Further, “Cable code property” has been renamed to “Cable” to emphasise that the updates affect the entire cable.

 

14.  Enhanced sound calculation options

When performing sound calculations in ventilation design, MagiCAD offers versatile options for defining which parts of the ventilation network are taken into account. For example, the sound generated by fittings can be ignored in the calculation results. This enables the user to adjust calculations according to local standards and practices.

15.  Improved BCF Manager

The improved BIM Collaboration Format Manager (BCF Manager) supports importing and exporting reports in the newest 2.0 file format ensuring better cooperation with a wider range of 3rd party software. The floating dialog for the BCF Manager stays open between checking an issue from the BCF report and making the necessary corrections in the model, saving time and improving usability. When an issue is corrected, the user can just skip to the next one, without having to reload the report in between. Other usability improvements bring user experience to a new level, with more flexibility when handling topics and comments.

 

16.  Improved generation of Reports and Legends

With the new MagiCAD version, producing reports or legends based on a selected area in the model is much more convenient. Predefined selection areas can be stored into the project and later used when performing calculations or creating legends. Report and Legend tools both offer the “Check duplicate positions” option in MagiCAD Electrical to make sure that unnecessary duplicates are not taken into account.

 

17. Modify areas instead of redrawing

Grip points are added to lines to enable easier modification of existing areas, for example when architectural drawings change during the project. Additionally, it is now possible to add and remove vertex points, offering more versatile possibilities to change shape of the area during the project.  Just click on a vertex point or the midpoint of a line segment, and then right click to add or remove a vertex point.

 

18. Improved piping balancing calculations

The new MagiCAD version makes designing piping networks using all zone valve types more flexible. Automatic zone valves can be placed into the main branch, which can include networks balanced with manual zone valves and radiator valves. At the same time, the optimal adjustment of all valves in the entire network can be ensured. The improved MagiCAD balancing calculations also support network configurations where manual zone valves are installed into both return and supply pipes in the same network.
