EDP Environmental is a leading provider of environmentally conscious M&E Engineering Design Services in the UK. The company implemented MagiCAD software into their design workflow in June 2018 and have since been using the software successfully on multiple projects. Neil Bates, Director of Building Services at EDP Environmental, shared with us his experiences of working with the MagiCAD Schematics module, recounting the time savings and risk mitigation that the software has enabled.

Improved design workflow and accuracy

Before EDP Environmental transitioned to MagiCAD Schematics, they had to maintain separate plan drawings and schematic drawings while constantly switching between different platforms for various tasks. The risks for mistakes in such a complicated process were evident.

“Prior to the implementation of MagiCAD, we prepared schematics in complete isolation from the plan drawings. The schematic drawings were prepared in AutoCAD and imported into Revit just so that we could utilise the common drawing border and presentation tools. Any changes to the plans required the schematics to be manually updated and then re-imported into Revit,” explained Neil.

“This traditional approach is prone to errors, from simple typos to complete data omissions, and is heavily reliant on the engineer checking and re-checking the output prior to issue, resulting in long turn around of what can be relatively simple changes to the design,” continued Neil.

Synchronization enables productive and confident design work

The synchronization between plan drawings and schematic drawings has also made it easier to manage design changes that are necessary when determining optimal selections and settings for MEP systems, resulting in improved productivity.

“The implementation of the MagiCAD Schematics has enabled linking the plan drawings to the schematics. This means that the plans and schematic drawings are seamlessly updated when flow rates, velocity, pressure drops, or pipe and duct sizes change. Engineers are able to focus their expertise on determining optimal duct and pipe selections and the tool quickly and accurately transfers the details from the plan drawing to the schematics saving hours of work,” said Neil.

Neil continued, “The preset view templates allow us to check the schematics visually with highlights for high velocity or pressure drops. This provides a further quality assurance check before the design develops further.”

Saving time with the MagiCAD symbol library

EDP Environmental have found the integrated symbol library in MagiCAD to be particularly helpful. The library provides hundreds of UK localised symbols for Revit within a convenient and easy to use tool palette for immediate use in schematic drawing.

“The integrated MagiCAD schematic symbol library has been almost invaluable for us. It has enabled us to maintain consistency in symbol selection across multiple projects. The tool has also allowed us to perform some 20 to 30 minute tasks in seconds just by dragging and dropping symbols into a schematic drawing,” said Neil.

“Overall, incorporating MagiCAD for Revit – the Schematics, Ventilation, Piping and Electrical modules – into our design workflow has sped up our design by over 30%, which is what MagiCAD promised when presenting their solution,” concludes Neil.

EDP Environmental is a leading provider of environmentally conscious M & E Engineering Design Services. The company operates throughout the UK offering advice and design across the full spectrum of Mechanical and Electrical Building Services and on Renewable Technologies.

MagiCAD Schematics

MagiCAD Schematics was brought to market in late 2017 and was the first schematic creation software to work in synchronisation with Revit models. The module provides dynamic linking and synchronisation of elements between schematic drawings and families in the Revit model. The bi-directional data exchange between the Revit model and the schematic drawing ensures data constistency throughout a project. MagiCAD Schematics also saves design time and speeds up project delivery by providing ready-made, localised symbol libraries and integrated functions for adding symbols to schematic drawings.
