Background

Derry Ltd offers full design and installation capabilities for Mechanical and Electrical Building Services. Based in Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire, Derry carry out Mechanical and Electrical Services engineering nationwide, from inception to providing full coordinated installation information for the construction team.

In recent years, Derry have made significant investments to implement 3D design technology and to support industry requirements for BIM. Today they offer a true multidisciplinary approach to design development and coordination.

“The key reasons for Derry to take on MagiCAD were initially the library of readymade and consistent components, as well as the advanced coordination tools which would enable us to design and coordinate faster than with out-of-the-box Revit. As we explore MagiCAD in greater depth with each new project, we are finding more and more high-quality, time-saving functions”, comments BIM Manager Mark Silcock from Derry Ltd. in Newark.

The Solution

From the beginning of 2015, Derry has used MagiCAD Piping, MagiCAD Ventilation and MagiCAD Electrical modules with Autodesk Revit MEP.

“MagiCAD’s Connection Tools for ventilation, pipework, drainage, and device connections all enable operations that we would struggle to live without. MagiCAD allows faster coordination through improved routing and connection tools, and enables easy display of single line pipework using industry standards for different elevations. These provide a huge advantage over out-of-the-box Revit”, says Mark.

“MagiCAD allows Derry Ltd to create models that closely reflect what you would expect to find installed on site. For us, the Connection Tools are by far the greatest strength of the MagiCAD software. Other important features are the built-in elevation parameters which enable better display properties, the running index tools for referencing elements throughout the entire project, as well as the ever-increasing library of products all built to the same standards”.

“Typical everyday challenges facing Derry Ltd are tight ceiling voids and tight time frames. The ability to make the right connections with very little manipulation, and being able to create 45-degree duct and pipe take-offs on the fly are massive time savers compared to the workarounds required to create the same layouts in out-of-the-box Revit”.
