Description of the project
Could you give a brief description of the project and its scope?
The project was an as-built survey of building architecture and building services installations.

What was your role within Berrilan in this project?
As Engineering Manager at Berrilan, my role was to act as team coordinator and quality supervisor.
What has been Berrilan’s experience of BIM projects?
Berrilan positions itself as a value-driven company within the digital transformation of the construction sector, especially in the field of BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology, and we are committed to using advanced technologies to improve efficiency and quality in our engineering and consulting processes.
BIM is a comprehensive approach that enables the creation and management of 3D models that contain detailed information about all aspects of a construction project. A BIM model includes information about building components, from geometry to design, economic, environmental and other related aspects. BIM has become increasingly important in the construction industry, helping to optimise the design, construction and management of buildings and infrastructure projects.
Applying BIM methodology allows us to optimise our project management, reducing errors, improving team collaboration, simulating asset behaviour and optimising early decision-making.
What was the biggest challenge in this project?
The as-built survey project of the Talent House II building involved the creation of an accurate and detailed digital representation of the building as it actually exists, once construction had been completed.
This digitalisation process posed two important challenges:
– Documentation and collaboration. Gathering all the needed information for the definition of the building architecture and building services systems involves collaboration with all parties involved, and they need to provide accurate and up-to-date data of all variations and updates that were made in the field, in order to ensure that the digital model accurately reflects the finished building.
– Coordination between disciplines. Modelling the large amount of existing installations and adjusting layouts to reflect existing openings and spaces required advanced coordination between architecture and building services, as well as coordination between the various building services disciplines themselves.

How did MagiCAD help you solve these challenges?
The need for interdisciplinary coordination and tight lead times meant that we needed a comprehensive solution, such as MagiCAD, that integrates with modelling platforms and provides essential functionalities to improve coordination and collaboration.
– Real-time clash detection: This feature allows you to identify potential clashes between building services systems and architectural features at the same time as you are working with the model. This is essential to avoid collisions and subsequent problems during construction. Real-time clash detection ensures designers can address issues proactively.
– Resolving clashes: When clashes are detected, MagiCAD provides tools to solve them efficiently. Modellers can easily adjust the design elements to ensure they fit within the overall project. This helps to avoid delays and additional costs during modelling.
– Intelligent connection of devices and outlets: MagiCAD also provides tools that make it easy to connect devices and outlets to the system design. This is crucial to ensure that electrical, piping and ventilation networks are properly connected to their end devices.

Did you use modelling functions, calculations, or both?
Only modelling and coordination tools were used as this was our first time using MagiCAD in a project. Currently, we are using the full complement of modelling, calculation and coordination tools in other projects.

Was there a particular function that proved helpful in this project or in other projects?
All of the cross-discipline coordination functions.
What was your overall experience of MagiCAD in this project?
MagiCAD is a powerful tool.
What was the significance of BIM software to project management, as well as cooperation and coordination among project parties?
Without the use of a tool like MagiCAD and the different functionalities, the quality of the final result would have been lower, and the time spent would have been higher.
What were the benefits of using MagiCAD for Revit compared to using plain Revit MEP?
Powerful functionalities for real-time clash detection, modelling and coordination.
Did you save time during project design with MagiCAD?
Of course, and, in addition to overall time savings, MagiCAD enables modelling and reviewing to be done in real time, which ensures the quality of the modelling work and design choices without having to revisit and modify the model.
