ETS NORD improves access to environmental data for designers with MagiCAD Cloud Environmental Data Service

As sustainability requirements continue to grow across the construction sector, access to reliable environmental data has become increasingly important for both designers and manufacturers. Accurate EPD data and GWP data are now essential for lifecycle assessments and for meeting project and regulatory requirements. 

ETS NORD, a manufacturer of ventilation and air distribution products, has taken a structured approach to making its environmental data available in BIM‑compatible format in MagiCAD Cloud by using MagiCAD Cloud Environmental Data Service. GWP data for their products is now available at product and variant level, making it easier to use in LCA and sustainability assessments.  

Environmental data is becoming a core requirement in design

Designers are increasingly expected to consider environmental impact already in the early stages of a project. In practice, this means using EPD data and GWP data as part of LCA calculations during the design phase.

At the same time, manufacturers are expected to provide detailed and verified environmental data for their products. While this data often exists, it is not always available in a format or location where it can be easily used in LCA calculations. This can lead to time consuming manual work, inconsistent use of environmental data, and a reliance on generic values instead of product specific information.

“Environmental data needs to be available where designers work”

We asked Marcus Kukkonen, Quality and Sustainability Manager at ETS NORD, how they approach environmental data management and how they use MagiCAD Cloud Environmental Data Service. 

What was your main challenge before using the service?

”Previously, environmental data such as EPDs and GWP were available, but it was hard to gather the necessary info because it was spread across different documents. It was difficult and time-consuming for designers to find, compare and use that data correctly.”

How are you using the service today?

“We use MagiCAD Cloud Environmental Data Service to make verified EPD and GWP data available at product and variant level directly in MagiCAD Cloud. Designers can access environmental data already in the planning phase and use it as a basis for LCA calculations.  This helps ensure that the EPD and GWP data is consistent and aligned with our published and verified declarations.” 

What results have you seen?

“Working with structured environmental data has improved transparency and data quality. Variant level environmental data enables more accurate LCA calculations and reduces the need to rely on generic averages that are usually higher than our EPD figures. Internally, it has also supported more systematic data management.” 

How does this support your customers and designers?

“The service provides reliable product specific environmental data that can be used as a basis for LCA calculations and sustainability assessments. This reduces manual work and the risk of interpretation errors and helps designers meet increasing project and regulatory requirements more efficiently. It also enables us to provide more consistent support across different markets and projects.” 

What would you say to other manufacturers?

“I recommend managing environmental data in a structured way, starting from how it will be used by designers and customers. Product level environmental data improves credibility, supports future requirements, and makes collaboration with designers and customers smoother. Having environmental data available in a format that supports BIM and LCA tools is becoming increasingly important.” 

Making environmental data usable in design workflows

MagiCAD Cloud Environmental Data Service enables manufacturers to make verified EPD data and GWP data available in MagiCAD Cloud in a structured, BIM-compatible format that can be used in LCA and sustainability assessment tools. Environmental data can be managed at product and variant level and used in design phase calculation workflows such as LCA.
