Manens-Tifs s.p.a.

Manens-Tifs is one of the top consulting engineering companies in Italy, specialised in sustainability, energy and MEP engineering of large buildings and important structures. It has expertise in the design of electricity distribution systems, communication systems, safety systems, IT network, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, lighting, acoustics and renewable energy plants.

Manens-Tifs provides services ranging from feasibility studies to design (concept, preliminary and detailed design) and from project and site management to commissioning activities. It offers also specific consultancies for research and development projects aimed at finding innovative solutions in various areas of MEP engineering.

The company has three offices located in Padova, Verona and Riyadh (KSA).

THE PROJECT

MagiCAD is being used for the second phase of the renovation and extension of an international airport in Italy. The project includes:

  • Extension of the Extra Schengen arrivals hall (ground floor)
  • Extension of the Extra Schengen departures hall (first floor)
  • Construction of a new tower, added to the existing 6 towers. The new tower will be served by two new mobile fingers, connected to the terminal by a fixed jetty.

This new structure represents the second phase of the whole extension, that will lead to the doubling of the existing terminal area Current Sqm is 75’000.

CHALLENGE

“The preliminary design was developed with CAD methodology while the detailed design instead was developed with BIM methodology,” says Daniel Carta, BIM Manager at Manens Tifs. “The deadline for the delivery of detailed design was very tight. A lot of digital objects (Revit families) had to be developed and created in BIM Models Vision and customised specifically for this project, where the client wanted to be involved in the choice of plant elements (e.g. mechanical equipment, air terminals, fan coil units).”

“We had a high density of MEP elements per square meter, with a high level of multidisciplinary geometric coordination required. Many changes were required for coordination and subsequent recalculation/resizing of distribution elements (ducts and piping),” he adds.

SOLUTION

“In order to create many customized MEP objects for the project, we decided to use MagiCAD – specifically, MagiCreate and generic object library. This way, we created a large number of families in a short time. Moreover, considering the advantage of working with a centralised database, it was possible to create two work teams – while a team was preparing families in MagiCreate, the modelling team was creating elements in BIM models through Install Product tool. Moreover, thanks to the semi-automatic insertion tools of Install Product and Element Guided Connection Tools we succeeded in optimising modelling time. The use of these tools enabled a quick start of the project, which required many customisations when compared to other projects,” explains Daniel.

He adds: “Another critical aspect was the need to manage many small variations in service distribution networks. During the sizing calculations, because of the quick proceeding of the project, it was necessary to adopt a strong coordination between the disciplines. Thanks to the sizing functions of Revit and the application of MagiCAD’s additional functions, we succeeded in running sizing calculation as many times as needed, reducing waste of time due to the small variations and the risks connected to the deliverables. We achieved a high degree of consistency between calculation reports and 2D drawings.”

BENEFITS OF USING MAGICAD

  • Quick start-up of the project
  • Higher modelling speed ratio especially for high detailed LOD
  • Optimisation of the recalculation distribution network due to interdisciplinary coordination

Footnote UK

In January 2019 we unified our brand under MagiCAD. Progman Oy and our subsidiary companies CADCOM AB and Progman Software UK Ltd, were renamed to MagiCAD Group. In addition to this, MagiCloud was renamed to MagiCAD Cloud.
