Common User Questions

Is MagiCAD for Revit worth it compared to using Revit alone?

Many engineers find MagiCAD essential for efficient HVAC and piping design in Revit. Features such as automatic connections, pressure drop calculations, and schematic–model synchronisation can make design faster, more accurate, and easier to manage.

Our UK account managers can provide advice on your project needs here.

MagiCAD pricing – how much does it cost in the UK?

MagiCAD pricing is determined by modules selected, number of users, and licence model, with monthly payment options available through Reality Finance. We’ll help you find the package that best suits your needs.

You can request a quote here or speak with a UK account manager here to explore demos, trial options, and tailored recommendations for your projects.

What is MagiCAD for AutoCAD and how does it differ from standard AutoCAD?

MagiCAD for AutoCAD is a specialist MEP design solution built on top of Autodesk AutoCAD. It extends AutoCAD’s core drafting tools with MEP-specific intelligent objects, product data, calculations and automated workflows to speed up design and improve accuracy.

How steep is the learning curve for MagiCAD?

MagiCAD integrates directly with Revit and AutoCAD, so users often adapt quickly. If you’d like guidance, our UK account managers can recommend suitable training or eLearning resources to support onboarding.

Does MagiCAD support UK calculation standards?

Yes. MagiCAD includes support for CIBSE, BS 8558, BS EN 806, and CIPHE standards, with localised datasets available and more here.

Download & Installation

Where can I find my MagiCAD licence keys?

Your MagiCAD software licence keys (activation IDs) are usually sent by email shortly after your initial purchase or when renewing a subscription.

If the email isn’t easy to locate, it can be useful to check with your company’s IT administrator. Alternatively, you might contact the MagiCAD support team, who can help you retrieve your licence details here.

Which version of MagiCAD is compatible with Revit, AutoCAD, and BricsCAD?

For the latest compatibility information, download the MagiCAD Operating Environment and Version Compatibility PDF here. You can also find this document in the MagiCAD Portal by searching for “operating environment”, or check out our blog for more information here.

If you need to continue working on an older platform version, you can also install an earlier MagiCAD version alongside your current one, as MagiCAD licences are backwards compatible.

Where can I download the MagiCAD software?

Various versions of MagiCAD, including the latest and older releases for AutoCAD or Revit, can be downloaded from the MagiCAD Portal here.

A valid software licence key (activation ID) is required to access the downloads.

How do I install MagiCAD for the first time?

It can be helpful to start by reviewing the instructions included in your licence delivery email. Then download the installer from the MagiCAD Portal and follow the step-by-step setup wizard.

Please note that IT administrator rights are typically needed to complete the installation successfully.

How can I check which version of MagiCAD I’m currently using?

To check your current MagiCAD version, open MagiCAD within the AutoCAD or Revit environment and navigate to Help > About MagiCAD. The dialog will display the version number and platform, which is useful to include when contacting support.

Licence Activation & Management

How do I activate or renew my MagiCAD licence?

Licence activation usually happens during installation using your activation ID. For renewals, it can be helpful to check with your company’s IT administrator or sales contact to confirm that your licence has been extended, then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the activation.

How do I activate my Stand-alone (SLM) MagiCAD licence after installation?

After installing the MagiCAD client, you may find it helpful to open the MagiCAD Licence Management Utility (LMU), which is installed automatically with the software. You can then add your stand-alone licence key (activation ID) in the LMU. Licences are activated locally and can also be manually borrowed and returned if needed.

A detailed guide on SLM licences is available from the MagiCAD Portal here. Enter “Management” in the search field to assist.

How do I activate my Network (NLM) MagiCAD licence after installation?

Network licence keys (activation IDs) are managed through the MagiCAD Network Licence Management Utility (NLMU), hosted on your company’s licence server and typically added by your IT administrator.

Once activated, the service allows any PC with the MagiCAD client to borrow and return licences across multiple machines, depending on the number of seats purchased.

A detailed guide on SLM licences is available from the MagiCAD Portal here. Enter “Management” in the search field.

Can a MagiCAD licence be used on multiple computers or by multiple users?

Whether a licence can be used on multiple computers depends on the type:

  • Stand-alone (SLM) licences are for a single workstation but can be transferred using the borrow-and-return process.
  • Network (NLM) licences are managed via your company’s server, allowing multiple users to borrow licences depending on the number of seats.

A guide is available for download from the MagiCAD Portal here. To access it, simply enter “Management” in the search field.

What should I do if the licence activation fails?

If activation fails, check your internet connection, firewall settings, and ensure the licence details entered in the LMU are correct.

If the issue persists, email our support team here with your activation ID and any error messages for faster assistance.

Upgrades & Maintenance

How do I upgrade my MagiCAD version to the latest version?

Download the latest installer from the MagiCAD Portal here. Close any open AutoCAD or Revit sessions before starting.

If a previous version of MagiCAD is detected, the installer will upgrade it automatically while preserving your settings.

You can also download the latest operating environment and compatibility documents from the portal here.

Do I need to uninstall old versions of MagiCAD?

No. Multiple versions can coexist on the same PC alongside their matching AutoCAD or Revit versions. This allows you to continue using older versions for legacy projects in parallel with newer ones. However, we recommend removing any versions you no longer need.

eLearning

What is MagiCAD eLearning?

MagiCAD eLearning offers online courses to help you develop your skills. Your organisation’s administrator will invite you via the MagiCAD Access Management (MAM) portal. Once activated, you can access courses anytime, 24/7, for the duration of your subscription.

Why haven’t I received an invitation?

You haven’t received an invitation because your administrator hasn’t activated or sent it yet. They must log in to MAM, add you as a user, and assign eLearning. After this, your account will appear as:

  • Verified – ready to start courses

  • Pending – you’ll receive an email to complete registration

How does my administrator add users to MagiCAD eLearning?

Once logged in to MAM, the administrator can add users by:

  • Entering email addresses individually
  • Copying and pasting multiple emails (e.g., from Outlook)
  • Importing a CSV file containing first name, last name, and email (use semicolons as separators and include a header row)

Administrators can also cancel invitations anytime using the Remove users option.

I was invited to create a MagiCAD account – what happens next?

If you are new to MagiCAD:

  1. Click the link in the Complete your registration email

  2. Confirm your registration via the verification email

  3. You’ll receive a third email with login details and a link to the eLearning portal

If you already have a MagiCAD account, use the invitation email link and sign in with your existing credentials. Forgot your password? You can reset it from the login page.

I can log in but don’t see any courses

If courses don’t appear, your administrator hasn’t activated eLearning. To do so, they must:

  1. Log in to MAM and go to the Users tab

  2. Select the relevant users

  3. Choose Activate services from the Actions menu

  4. Tick eLearning and click Activate

You’ll receive a confirmation email, and courses will then appear. Administrators must also assign themselves as users to access eLearning.
