EFLA started using MagiCAD on AutoCAD technology already in 2008 for heating and ventilation design. Over the years EFLA expanded also to Autodesk’s Revit technology and began using it directly with MagiCAD for Revit.

“We wanted to add MagiCAD for Revit on top of Autodesk’s Revit from the beginning because in our experience MagiCAD enables quicker and more automated design processes on Revit and offers many useful functions which are not available on the Revit technology natively”, comments Civil Engineer Brynjar Örn Árnason from EFLA Consulting Engineers in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The Solution

EFLA have later transitioned almost completely to Revit technology. Today, they use MagiCAD for Revit in all of their new Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) projects, with the applications MagiCAD Ventilation, Piping, Sprinkler Designer, Electrical and Comfort & Energy. EFLA also makes use of the extensive online BIM object library MagiCloud, together with MagiCreate, MagiCAD’s easy-to-use application for creating BIM objects.

“MagiCAD has become an essential asset to our HVAC and Electrical design departments, as it ensures high design quality in our project deliveries and at the same time enables an efficient BIM process in all of our projects through its IFC and BIM Collaboration features”, explains Electrical Engineer Ingólfur Helgason from EFLA.

“By using MagiCAD, we can perform all the relevant calculations based on the accurate technical data contained in MagiCAD’s BIM objects, resulting in more realistic 3D model of the building’s MEP systems. MagiCAD’s extensive and constantly growing database of BIM objects and the manufacturer-specific product selection plugins enable us to import into our projects real ventilation, piping and electrical products with the necessary technical and sound data included. This is crucial when we need to deliver extensive calculations for every system and have to specify the size and dimensions of the systems accurately”, continues Ingólfur.

“Using a large BIM object database also saves us a lot of time, as we can use real MEP products, ventilation units and lighting devices without having to create the product families from scratch or search for them online”, adds Brynjar.

“However, the most important timesaver with MagiCAD is that we can perform functional calculations on MEP systems at the same time as we update the design. The calculation features enable us to quickly verify the design, which is particularly important in complex projects with frequent changes. For example, the integrated sound and balancing calculations in ventilation design, save a lot of time compared to making them separately. Likewise, being able to calculate sprinkler systems directly within Revit eliminates the need for using a separate sprinkler calculation software and drawing the system up again for calculations”, Brynjar concludes.
