About aBIMM Programme at TU Dublin

TU Dublin’s MSc in Applied Building information Modelling Management (aBIMM) is a multi-disciplinary programme which is open to graduates of building design and construction related programmes, including architects, engineers, surveyors, architectural technologists, and construction and facilities managers.

The programme is delivered by a complete range of domain-specific BIM experts from across the College of Engineering and Built Environment, from Schools in the areas of Architecture, Building Engineering, Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, and Surveying (Quantity and Geomatics).

The programme provides an educational setting in which to develop the ability to initiate and lead the holistic and integrated process of design, construction, and life-cycle management through the medium of BIM, centred on the collaborative and multi-disciplinary building design process.

How MagiCAD is used in the Programme

MagiCAD has been integrated into the MEP stream of the MSc in aBIMM since 2017. It was also used in the Level 9 MSc in aBIMM programme which won the Irish Construction Excellence Awards in 2019.

The integration and use of MagiCAD has enabled us to bring the learning outcomes up to the level required for MSc standards,” says Kevin Furlong, Lecturer in Collaborative BIMM Processes & Digital Construction at Technological University Dublin.

MagiCAD also allows us to bring Autodesk Revit from its generic MEP design level capabilities to a fully validated scheme using the verified MEP content library, more efficient and powerful modelling tools, and fully integrated MEP engineering calculations. This allows students to fully understand the capabilities of BIM within their own discipline and how fully validated construction and engineering design models and documentation can be achieved.

Prior to the integration of MagiCAD, aBIMM students coming from professional practices were unconvinced of the generic Revit calculations and results, and whether these could be used effectively for clients in their workplace. MagiCAD has overcome this uncertainty with the integration of recognised design standards (CIBSE, CIPHE etc.), while also gaining from the efficiency of the technology,” adds Kevin.

Using MagiCAD on the educational projects has also helped the students on their Multidisciplinary Collaborative Modules where both Mechanical and Electrical disciplines can coordinate together and subsequently with both the Structural and Architectural practices. Kevin says: “The use of the real time clash avoidance and Builders Work Tools adds substantially to this collaborative design.

The overall benefit of using MagiCAD is that it has enabled students to bring Revit from its generic capabilities to fully validated MEP designs that can now be brought from an educational environment to the design office and construction site and further on to FM,” Kevin concludes.
