1. Support for busbar trunking

MagiCAD 2024 Update Release 2


MagiCAD Electrical now includes everything needed for modelling busbar trunking systems. The software includes a new product class, parts, and modelling functions for busbar trunking. Calculation support for busbar trunking systems will be implemented in a later version.

There are many possibilities for feeding the busbar system. You can use end, middle, or inline cable feed units, or feed the busbar directly from switchboards with switchboard feed units. Sub switchboards can be supplied either directly with switchboard supply units or through electrical cables from tap-off boxes connected to busbar segments.

In addition, the branch lengths of trunking system fittings can be edited after installation.

2. Bus system handling


A new circuit type, Bus circuit, enables accurate definition of bus systems. You can add both power and data circuit objects into a bus circuit. Connecting objects to bus circuits does not interfere with existing power and data calculations.

There are also two new attributes available for electrical objects, Number of connections and Bus current, which are used when they are included in bus circuits. The information in these two new attributes can be summarised into the bus circuit information.

Bus hosts and circuits can be easily managed in a separate dialogue, and you can set warning limits to receive warnings it the bus circuit cable length, bus current or number of connections is too big.

3. Electrical object groups


You can now combine electrical objects together and install them as an object group. Using object groups saves a lot of time when a building has repeating combinations of electrical objects. For example, if the same combination of sockets and switches is installed to doorframes in a building, you can create an object group and then install them as a group for each room instead of adding the objects individually.

If you need to edit the object groups after you have already installed them, you can simply modify any one of the installed object groups and then run the Update DWG function to update all the other ones accordingly. Objects inside an object group can be accessed individually, so the grouping does not affect any other functions.

4. Product installation to sloped surfaces


It is now possible to tilt products to match sloped installation surfaces. The tilt angle can be defined either during installation or afterwards with the Change Properties function. Products can be tilted lengthwise or widthwise and the tilt angle is maintained even when moving or rotating the objects or their symbols.

5. Sum up total air flows in ventilation reports


There is often a need to sum up the total air flow in and out of different areas of a building, for example to estimate the demand on an air handling unit. MagiCAD now includes three new parameters that can be used to sum up total air flows in ventilation reports.

The new parameters are Flow sum (total flow), Flow sum VAV Boost (total flow using boost flow rate for VAV systems) and Flow sum VAV Min (total flow using minimum flow rate for VAV systems). These can be added to ventilation reports in the Report template tool.

6. Add total VAV air flows to drawing texts


New parameters for total VAV air flows can be added to different dimension texts and part property lines. This provides a better overview of different flow rates in the drawing.

The following parameters can now be added to air terminal device dimension texts:

  • Flow sum VAV Boost
  • Flow sum VAV Boost with sign
  • Flow sum VAV Boost without sign
  • Flow sum Min
  • Flow sum Min with sign
  • Flow sum Min without sign

The following parameters can now be added to flow damper dimension texts:

  • Flow VAV boost
  • Flow VAV min

The following parameters can now be added to part property lines:

  • Flow VAV Boost
  • Flow VAV Min

7. Close flow dampers in calculation report


It is now possible to close flow dampers directly in the extended flow calculation report for ventilation systems. When a damper is closed, there is no flow through it and the damper acts as a cap. This allows you to simulate networks with and without extensions.

8. Change sizes of climate beams and fan coil units

It is now possible to change the size of a climate beam or a fan coil unit using either the MagiCAD Part Properties or the AutoCAD Properties function. Size changes are only possible when the device is not connected.

This addition makes it much easier to modify climate beam or fan coil unit sizes after installation. Previously, this was only possible with the Find and Replace function or required deleting the device and installing a new one.

9. Change sizing method in heating/cooling calculation report

Piping, Calculation

It is now possible to change the sizing method directly in the heating/cooling calculation report. This allows you to evaluate different sizing methods before updating the results to the model.

Simply right-click a row on the calculation report, select Set sizing method and then click Update sizing to see the results. You can then either keep the new sizing method and update the results to the model or cancel and go back to the original one.

10. Print full calculation report

Ventilation and piping calculation reports now allow you to print the full calculation report in one go with a new Print all… function. Previously, the sections had to be printed separately, which was very time-consuming.

11. Project specific page templates for circuit schematic drawings

Electrical, Circuit Designer

You can now create project-specific page templates to be used for circuit schematic drawings. The page templates automatically add frame and title blocks to circuit schematic drawings that are created from switchboard schematics with the Create Circuit Schematic function.
